1999 GT Pro Performer Chrome Project
1999 GT Pro Performer all done...
The 1999 GT Pro Performer is all done now the front brake cable has been installed.

Was quite an easy project as the BMX needed very little doing to it.

Finishing touches...
The 1999 GT Pro Performer was always missing its main tube decal, luckily I have a full set of NOS decals for this BMX but I am only going to replace the decal that is missing.

I have plumbed in the rear brake and gyro and taken the bmx for a spin. All that is left to do is install the front brake cable and a final buff.

Build it back up...
Every part of the 1999 GT Pro Performer has been cleaned the best I can so it is time to start putting the thing back together.

I have cleaned the wheels up and put new inner tubes on. I have put back on the original Dyno Hoop-D tyres. I know the have seen better days but they came with the bmx so they are going back on.

I have put a set of NOS GT Camshaft grips on the bmx and also put the brake levers back on. The brakes have been cleaned and installed too. No the wheels and stunt pegs are back on the bmx is really taking shape even more so now the crank and pedals are back on.

Time to strip...
The 1999 GT Pro Performer has been totally stripped down. As much of the surface rust as I could get has been removed apart from the usual places.

The seat post, forks and bars have come up beautifully.

OA bath complete...
Well the drop outs and pegs have been in the OA Bath for about 24 hours.

I have taken them out and they look good to me so I have swilled them off with plenty of water and then used WD40 to coat and dry them.

They look miles better than before and with a good buffing should be just like new in no time.

Time for a bath...
It's time to crack on with the 1999 GT Pro Performer.

As with all GT BMX's with Pac Man forks water tended to sit on top of the drop out and over time cause surface rust.

The rest of the BMX will polish up just fine with a little work. To clean the rust from the front drop outs I will be doing an Oxalic Acid bath (OA Bath).

When dealing with chemicals it is so important to wear a mask, gloves and eye protection even though we are just using a weak solution.

I have added about 6 table spoons of OA into water in a plastic box and put the front forks and stunt pegs in. I will now leave it be for a day and check on it tomorrow to see how it is getting on.

What's the plan for the 1999 GT Pro Performer...
I have a NOS decal set for this bmx, with a little work this thing will be back to it's best in no time.
